“Can I do this, or will I look like some sort of gay superhero?” -Patrick Stewart from the film Jeffrey
Jeffrey is about a guy named Jeffrey (Steven Weber) who has decided never to have sex again. Why? Because he is tired of worrying about contracting HIV/AIDS every time he has sex. The problem is just as he decides never to have sex ever again, he meets the man of his dreams, Steve (Michael T. Weiss). This is a very touching movie that is also very hilarious. It really captures the enormous issue of dealing with HIV/AIDS in the 1980s and 90s at the height of the virus’ destruction. And it has a happy ending. Hint: Jeffrey and Steve live happily ever after.
P.S.: I actually saw this film in the theater way back in the dark ages of 1995 when I had no idea I was gay, yet I kept going to the theater to watch gay-themed films. I did figure out I was gay about four years later. I’m a little slow on things sometimes.
P.S.S: Jeffrey also features a fantastic cameo by one of my first serious crushes, Sigourney Weaver. And yes, my wife knows all about my crush on her. You’d think me dropping everything to see Sigourney Weaver in anything, even in a film she is in for all of 5 minutes, would have clued me in sooner to my sexuality. Oh well.
Anytime, anywhere. If Sigourney Weaver is in it, I’m watching it.
Well, maybe not that movie she did with Taylor Lautner.
But still, I tried though. Really, I did. 🙁
